Greed Gadget Guide - 5 Tips for Greener Electronics

We love our gadgets, along with our TVs, DVRs and other myriad electronic amusements.  And I know my Christmas list is filled with these little electronic playthings.  So how do we keep the blinking, beeping toys we love while staying green? Here’s how.

1. Find a place for your old toys.
Yep, you upgrade your phone to the newest sleekest model every few days or so, you tech diva you. Make sure you’ve found a place for that old, forgotten phone. Sell it online or take it to a store that recycles electronics.

2. Buy used.
Conversely, why not upgrade your gadgets from someone else’s collection. Way cheaper and less wasteful.

3. Solar chargers
Mini solar powered chargers are becoming ubiquitous these days. Get one for your MP3 players, smart phones and what-nots.

4. Buy batteries that last.
As you know, you can recycle batteries, but even that process takes up a fair amount of energy and resources. Skip the rigmarole altogether by purchasing rechargeable batteries. They cost a bit more than the disposables, but the investment will pay itself off quickly.

5. Kill vampire power.

Many of your appliances such as the HD TV and computer printer suckle energy from the wall even when they’re turned off. Pinch off the drain with a smart AC adapter that cuts the power after so many minutes of non-use. Or just unplug the things when not using them.

Now feel free to run out and buy me something fun!

My green gadget

I don't go through cell phones quickly. I recently had to upgrade, and decided that I'd try to do my part. I got a Reclaim (from Samsung, for Sprint). It's a neat phone, with a camera and navigation and whatnot (even facebook). But what I like most about it is it's "green" factor. It's made from bio plastics and recycled materials; and it has energy saving options, including an Energy Star-rated charger. It also comes in recyclable cardboard packaging instead of plastic. (It came with a way to ship off my old phone to be recycled!) The little ways to personalize it are nature oriented, with pictures and sounds of the natural world. I definitely remember to do my part with a constant reminder being such an important part of my day. I love my green phone- and, yes, the color choices are blue or green. If anyone has the option to choose a greener phone, they should take it. I love the decision I made.
